BACKGROUND: Hetalia wiki &
Roman HistoryPERSONALITY:
🠺 RESILIENT + OPTIMISTIC Rome has been shown to have a spirit that is resilient. Even during difficult times, between war and internal civil conflict, Rome's attitude is to persevere and keep going. He even has an optimistic view most of the time, bouncing back from one defeat only to look forward to the next battle where he insists he'll be the winner. Even during dire circumstances throughout his history, he's found a silver lining that has kept him going. His resilience has led to him defeat numerous countries and become the empire he is today. Rome's history has been full of crises, coups d'état and betrayal, but for the most part, he's been able to come back (the exception of course is the fall of the Western part of the Empire). The Roman Empire's borders have grown, shrunk, and grown again throughout his history.
🠺 ADVENTUROUS + ADAPTIVE Rome would have most likely stayed a small city and kingdom if it weren't for his desire to explore and become more powerful. He's always up for a challenge, a fight, or to explore and conquer new lands. He's said to have fallen in love with both Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt the first time he met them, and he's been shown in Hetalia to admire both their cultures. He's quite boisterous and prefers fighting and being outside rather than dealing with politics. Roman culture and religion were known for adapting and Romanizing cultures and traditions of lands that became a part of the Roman Empire. In Hetalia, Rome has been able to adapt to many different leaders throughout his life who've had very different personalities and styles. He's been through times of war and peace and three different types of government types (kingdom, republic, and empire). Even with all these changes, he's still has found a way to be the country his people need him to be. He been shown in Hetalia and history to be adaptive on the battlefield as well, especially with war tactics. He's even had to deal with how his economy runs several times. This is shown in a Hetalia strip where Rome's military was used for farming to help improve his economy/health.
🠺 AMBITIOUS If Rome did not desire to grow and become more powerful, history would have looked very different. Hetalia portrays Rome as someone who is always looking for strong people and challenging battles. While he enjoys relaxing and having fun, he enjoys fighting those who are stronger than him. Rome isn't the one to back down from a fight even if the circumstances are dire. Rome became a large empire because of his ambitions, his desire for power and expanding his borders. Many of his own leaders were ambitious themselves which most likely rubbed off on Rome. He becomes excited when he hears about
strong people, especially those who he feels embody Roman values of strength (mind, body, and leadership). His desire to better himself and become a powerful country led him to become a massive empire.
Rome's greatest weakness is also one of his strengths, something many of his leaders, generals, and politicians throughout his history share. The ambitions of his own people are a weakness of his, too, because of how Hetalia portrays nations. Rome has had his own share of leaders and politicians who will do anything for power. In turn, this has hurt him and has caused several internal conflicts throughout history. It's even said he grew too big too quickly, and this desire for power and wealth has caused him problems along the way. He's not the type to admit his weaknesses and let others worry about him.
🠺 HEADSTRONG
Rome is the type to push himself and never back down from a challenge. He's conquered many lands in order to give himself and his people power and wealth. Yet with such wealth and power, many foolish and bad decisions were made along the way. Even when he loses battles, he does not want to give up. He is committed to becoming stronger, but with strength and power comes responsibility. While he isn't a complete slacker, he is shown for not liking the politics and government side of maintaining his country and people.
🠺 HEDONISTICRome is shown in Hetalia to love indulging himself in many pleasures. These pleasures usually are beautiful women, wine, baths, gladiator performances, and fighting someone strong. While he's fought a lot, Rome appreciates taking time to relax (hence his "Pax Romana" era). As previously mentioned, some of his biggest motivations for exploring and conquering new places is to meet beautiful women (especially cute female nations). While he doesn't solely exist for pleasure, he sure loves to indulge in it and usually is up for a good time.
🠺 OVERLY CONFIDENT + DENIAL While denial isn't a personality trait, Rome doesn't want to face the reality that he's becoming weaker. Rome has been shown to
cover up and hide when isn't feeling well. He believes he's the type to always bounce back and become stronger despite the circumstances. He's seen telling other nations and his people how "strong", "awesome", "powerful", and "cool" he is. Being overly confident even led to his eventual downfall, as he counted on Germania too much as an ally. He wants to preserve the image/facade of him being a powerful and a "cool" empire despite the external and internal conflicts and battles happening. When his confidence is temporarily shattered, out of humiliation usually, he can be quite dramatic and be insecure. This side of him is shown in a strip where he goes to find a previous house of his in modern day Rome is now a bench for tourists to sit on and the strips involving his loss to Persia. Upon reflection after his death in Hetalia, he called himself foolish because he was overly confident in himself and could not comprehend that power and wealth were not permanent things for people and nations.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
🠺 "Immortality": Sort of, anyway. Rome's existence is tied to the Ancient Roman people so normal means simply can't kill him. He can still get hurt, receive scars, feel pain, etc.
🠺 Health/healing + Strength: Rome's health, ability to heal, and strength ties into how well (economically, socially, politically, etc.) his government, military, and people are doing. Countries in Hetalia have been shown to have minor colds from economic troubles and Rome's been shown in strips to feel fatigued after economic costly wars. He is physically stronger than a normal human and has greater endurance compared to the average human. He's not too overpowered, but his strength and healing are not typical to humans.
🠺 Fighting + Weapons: Rome is an excellent fighter who has many centuries of experience fighting in wars. He's skilled with Ancient Roman weapons, battle tactics, and is familiar with many different ancient fighting styles and weapons.
